For this project we learning more about food justice. In a group we picked a topic to learn about, in my group it was the impact factory farming has on the environment, and contacted an organization that is working on that issue. We contacted the FFAC(Factory Farming Awareness Coalition) and interviewed Claudia Lifton, the director in Denver. Using what we learned from her, we designed and built a planter box that represents the impact of factory farming on the environment. Another part of our project was to research and write a paper on a Latin American Country using the questions: Why do poor people historically inhabit rich lands? How might we combat inequities in the food system? |
https://www.britannica.com/place/Cuba/Sugarcane-and-the-growth-of-slavery
This article was useful because it had a lot of good information on it. I switched between this article and another one a lot and found both of them said the same thing, so I was pretty sure the information was accurate. I found when researching about slaves and sugar trade in Cuba. After gathering the information I need I started writing. During the different drafts I did, I continued to write more and fix up what I already had. I got a lot of helpful feedback, but the most helpful ones were the ones that pointed out sentences to make and made suggestions on what to add. These helped me change thing that I didn't notice on my own and making my research paper stronger. |
FOOD JUSTICE ISSUE:
Global Warming In Factory Farming
We interviewed Claudia Lifton from the FFAC(Factory Farming Awareness Coalition) to learn more about how we can factory farming affects the environment. Here is a brief section from the interview about how Factory Farming affects the environment and a little bit about what the FFAC does: "Factory farms are the largest producers of methane gas which is 20 times more potent than CO2, contributing more to global warming than the entire transportation sector. The FFAC empowers people to help save animals, the environment, and our own health through our daily food choices."
|
We also asked her about how we can stop Factory Farming and Global Warming and she told us:
"The most powerful thing that anyone can do as an individual is to eat less animal products. " -Claudia Lifton Using this interview we later designed a plaque that represents the FFAC and informs people about Factory Farming on the earth. Below is the link to the full interview where she talks more about the effects of Factory Farming on the environment and what we can do about it. |

Planter Box and Plaque Design
Using what we learned from Claudia, we designed a planter box and plaque to represent Factory Farming and its impact on the earth.
We first came up with basic sketches than took those sketches and put them into the program SketchUp to create a 3D model. Our first sketches are shown on the Group Proposal Link Below:

Research Paper: Cuba
For this part of the project we got into a different group of three. As a group we choose a country from Latin America to research about for the next months. For the Spanish side of the project we interviewed a cook from that country in Spanish and learned a recipe from them to learn to make. In Humanities we researched the history of the country and then wrote a paper using these questions:
Why do poor people historically inhabit rich lands? How might we combat inequities in the food system? |
During these past months we have been researching the history of our country. We visited the Mesa Library to get new information and spent many hours reading about our country. We were specifically looking for history about agriculture in the Country and the poor people who worked the land. We used the main questions to guide our research. We did article analysis' for some of our articles to get a better understanding of. During this time we also did some in class activities to learn more researching and analysing our findings. Below is my research work:
